Tokyo has been named the world's richest city in a report by business magazine CEOWorld. The magazine said the Japanese capital has a gross domestic product (GDP) of $2.55 trillion. That puts it ahead of $2.49 trillion for the New York area — which also includes Newark and Jersey City — and $1.62 trillion for the Los Angeles area. But it's not just GDP that makes Tokyo the world's richest city, the magazine said. When it was making its list, it also considered things like innovation, investment and technology. And Tokyo's excellence in these areas helped the city take first place on the 2025 list. There were a number of other Asian cities on the CEOWorld list. Seoul was fifth, while the area including Osaka and Kobe was eighth, and Shanghai was 10th. Other rich cities included London, Paris and Chicago. Earlier this year, a different report named Tokyo as the world's third-richest city. That report was done by a company called Henley and Partners. It made its list by finding out how many millionaires and billionaires were living in each city. The Henley report said there were more than 292,000 millionaires in Tokyo. The Japanese capital was behind New York and San Francisco on that list. But while the richest people in Tokyo are getting richer, other studies have found that the gap between the rich and the rest is getting bigger. From 2011 to 2023, Japan's richest people saw their wealth triple, while average people's wealth only grew by about 42%.
