Found just outside of Cairo next to the Giza Pyramids, the $1 billion museum has over 50,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt. For comparison, the Louvre Museum in Paris has about 35,000 pieces on display.
The museum started being built in 2005, with many of its artifacts moved from the Egyptian Museum, a century-old building in downtown Cairo.
In its entrance stands the statue of one of Egypt's most famous pharaohs, Ramesses the Great. The 3,200-year-old, 11-meter-tall statue used to stand in the center of a roundabout in front of Cairo's main train station.
From the museum's entrance, a six-story set of stairs goes up to the main galleries and a view of the nearby pyramids, which can also be visited by crossing a bridge from the museum.
The whole area around the museum and the pyramids has been transformed, and a subway station is being built outside the museum gates. A new airport — Sphinx International Airport — has also been opened just 40 minutes from the museum.
The museum's opening on November 1 included the inauguration of two halls for artifacts from the collection of King Tutankhamun. The whole 5,000-piece collection is being displayed together for the first time since Tutankhamun's tomb was found in 1922. The old Egyptian Museum didn't have enough space to show all the artifacts at once.
Egypt's government hopes the new museum will bring more tourists to the country. A record 15.7 million people visited in 2024, and the government hopes to see 30 million by 2032.
Hassan Allam, CEO of Hassan Allam Holding, the company that runs the museum, said he thinks the museum will get between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors a day.
"The world has been waiting … Everyone's excited," he said.
