The country is the world's biggest polluter, but it has been embracing renewable energy at a rapid pace. China's solar power generation increased by 46% in the third quarter of the year, while wind power generation increased by 11%.
China has also been one of the world's leaders in adopting electric vehicles, which has helped reduce its carbon emissions from transportation. However, this progress has been partly offset by increased emissions in other sectors, including construction and manufacturing.
The country has said that it will reduce its carbon emissions by between 7% and 10% by 2035.
Separate analysis found that renewable energy overtook coal as the world's top source of electricity earlier this year. This was seen as a major milestone, and the progress made by China was thought to be a key factor.
André Corrêa do Lago, the president of COP30 — the climate change conference taking place from November 10 to 21 in Brazil — said: "China is coming up with solutions that are for everyone, not just China."
But energy think tank Ember said places like the US and Europe are still relying too much on fossil fuels for their energy. And while there are signs of progress in some parts of the world, experts believe far more needs to be done.
Meanwhile, COP30’s Corrêa do Lago said that some of the world's wealthiest nations have lost their enthusiasm for tackling climate change. Since returning to office, US President Donald Trump has pulled his country out of the Paris Agreement on climate change, and his government has chosen not to send any high-level officials to COP30.
The secretary general of the United Nations, António Guterres, said it would be a "moral failure" if the world's governments don't manage to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, a key goal under the Paris Agreement.
